Cars Being Targeted by Thieves

Posted on Monday, 07 July 2008 09:07PM by Lauren Barker
The latest trend among thieves is to target catalytic converters from cars.  The high price of scrap metal has increased the number of thefts in the Newark area.  The owners of cars with catalytic converters have been advised to write their names and addresses on them.  This will help them be traced if they are stolen.  The converters are worth £60 each as scrap.  It is the pieces of rhodium, platinum and palladium that are worth the most money.  Local police say that the international price of these metals have soared over the past few years.  They believe that metal theft is the fastest growing crime at the minute.   In one example a car parked at a local petrol station was turned on its side so that the exhaust could be removed.  Nottingham police have sent out a message to drivers.  Even if you see someone underneath a car don't assume that it has broken down.  Nothing is as innocent as it seems.
