High scrap prices prompt theft of roadside drain covers

Posted on Wednesday, 04 June 2008 10:30AM by
Thieves in the Newark area have removed more than 200 roadside cast-iron drain covers throughout the district, as realisation dawns that scrap metal is now worth about £200 a tonne and that a pretty penny can be made.  Unfortunately these thieves give no though to the safety of people travelling on the roads, as the gaping holes left on the side of the road are a serious threat particularly to motorcycles and cyclists.  The missing drain covers are now being replaced by lightweight grates, embedded in a grill which is fixed into the road and cannot be removed.
