Palace Theatre’s New Year Schedule

If you’re still full of festive cheer and turkey by the time the new year comes around, you’ll be delighted by Newark Palace Theatre’s winter/spring programme which is a belly-buster of a schedule.

It’s the usual thrilling mix of award-winning musicians, drama, opera, comedy, ballet, children’s entertainment and youth theatre, so make it your New Year’s resolution to take another look at the Palace – you may be pleasantly surprised.

Everybody was hurting when the real thing called it a day recently, but the next best thing, REM-UK, come to the Palace on January 21st. The band have been around since 1996, building an enviable reputation as an authentic and entertaining tribute, no doubt belting out a few of REM’s most memorable tunes on the night.

Find yourself bemoaning a lack of heroes nowadays? Then look no further than Hugh Cornwell. The original guitarist, singer and main songwriter in The Stranglers enjoyed massive UK and European success with ten hit albums and twenty-one top forty singles, and comes to the Palace on February 3rd.

On February 9th, allow yourself to be transported to decadent, early 20th century Paris as Opera della Luna returns with a new production of Lehár's classic operetta, The Merry Widow. This imaginative English translation captures the glamour of the period as well as featuring Opera della Luna's trademark wit.
Perhaps best known for her portrayal of the infernal snob, Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet!) in Keeping Up Appearances, many people may be surprised to learn Patricia Routledge is an award-winning Broadway performer. Her many awards include a Tony for her Broadway performance in the Styne-Harburg musical Darling of the Day (1967) and a Laurence Olivier Award for her performance in Leonard Bernstein’s Candide (Old Vic, 1989). On February 10th, catch Patricia Routledge: Facing the Music at the Palace when writer and broadcaster Edward Seckerson leads a fascinating conversation with Patricia about her career.

Keeping the kids occupied during half-term can be difficult. Well, why not try The Panto Company’s production of Rumplestiltskin on February 13th which spins this classic tale into a golden show for children of all ages, filled with clap-a-long songs and amazing audience participation.

Double MOBO Award-winning Saxophonist YolanDa Brown is widely regarded as the emerging ‘voice’ of mainstream jazz in the UK. She is one of the most exciting, in-demand live performers whose concerts always sell out. Catch her at the Palace on February 16th.

Think of Mods and Rockers and it evokes images of Brighton seafront and shouts of "You killed my scooter!" Well, step back in time to the sixties with The Mods vs Rockers show on February 17th. Playing pop music that shaped and changed the world by The Who, The Kinks, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix to name but a few, you’ll have the best 60s party of your life.

Described simply as ‘me, a guitar and some more daft stuff’ Mike Harding’s evening of songs, stories and monologues from the man once described as ‘The grandfather of alternative comedy’ will have you collapsing in the aisles on February 25th.

Having been the singer for Squeeze, Ace and Mike and the Mechanics, Sheffield-born Paul Carrack will look back over his shoulder on his incredible back catalogue of hits on February 26th. Undoubtedly a key figure in British pop history, his shows are always something very special.

Warbey & Farrell’s internationally-acclaimed musical comedy act (March 15th) takes a hilarious look at the piano’s most famous pieces and players. Expect exquisite musical virtuosity, utter stupidity and rapier wit combined with a breathtaking display of gymnastic piano playing talent - all with four hands on one grand piano, from this ‘well strung’ duo.

An original member of the ‘Rat Pack’, the moniker of ‘legend’ is not mere hyperbole when applied to pianist and singer Buddy Greco. He’s played with the best – Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jnr to name but two, having recorded his first single in 1946 and going on to perform with the Benny Goodman Orchestra. Come along to the Palace on March 29th for a touch of Las Vegas swing and glamour.

Palace Theatre favourite Curtis Stigers returns on April 5th to showcase material from his new CD and perform his hit songs and Count Arthur Strong, showbiz legend and raconteur, comes to the Palace stage on April 25th to remind us just what we've been missing since his heyday at the very top of the entertainment business.
