Plans for New Hotel in Newark

Posted on Friday, 15 January 2010 10:14AM by Judy Meetham
A site previously earmarked for 10 new apartments could now potentially be turned into a four star hotel in Newark. Planning permission has been submitted for a 43 room hotel by a Leicestershire company on behalf of a client based abroad.

The application is to build on waste-land in Castlegate, and the building would be ideally placed within walking distance of the bus and train stations, town centre and tourist attractions.

If passed, the hotel would be a great asset to the town, bringing in tourists and possibly increasing the quality of events. It would be a boost to anyone wishing to stay in the town whilst visiting one of the international antiques fairs - as a lack of good quality hotels has been an issue in the past. The only drawback seems to be a lack of proposed facilities for conferences or weddings, as this would have benefited surrounding businesses by the influx of people attending these functions.

Plans for the hotel include an 18 vehicle car park at the rear, sympathetic design in keeping with the Georgian buildings along the street, and enough space behind to reduce the impact on the lock-keeper’s cottage. It is also hoped that the venture could create up to 30 full-time jobs.
