Taxi Fares Set to Rise.

Posted on Monday, 07 July 2008 08:49PM by Lauren Barker
Taxi fares in the Newark area could go up by more than 6% to cover the rising cost of fuel.  The cost of petrol has risen 23% in the past year and diesel by 31%.  It has hit taxi drivers hard and they are paying approximately 4p more per mile.  At the minute passengers in the Newark area are paying£1.59 per mile after the first mile.  The increase of just over 6% will take the fares to £1.69 per mile.  Taxi firms have had mixed responses about the plans.  Many firms have agreed with the council and supported the increase. Other firms however do not agree and feel they are going to lose customers.  Most believe that customers will understand.  Some taxi owners believe that they shouldn't put up prices even if it means they are making less profit.  They think that the fares are as high as people will be willing to pay.  Drivers feel that if the prices rise business will slow down considerably.  Taxis are already expensive in Newark and people don't need them.  As people are suffering from the credit crunch they will simply go without a taxi.
